How I Met The Beatles (And How They Broke My Heart)

A coming-of-age novel for teens of all ages

Excerpt: A Love Letter to John, Paul, George & Ringo by Barbara J. Guardino

Dear Beatles:

I am usually a very well behaved and decent twelve-year-old girl, but on account of my love for you, I am in a heap of trouble. It all started when I saw The Dave Clark Five on the Ed Sullivan Show, imitating you with their sound and even with their hairdos. Everyone at school seemed to like them except me.

Being a passionately loyal fan of yours, I decided to do something about it. So I gathered a group of 1,000 angry, teeth-gnashing Beatlemaniacs and led them on to Main Street, carrying signs such as: BAN THE DAVE CLARK FIVE. My being the leader of the group, when the girls from the opposing side arrived, they came after me. They hit me over the head with their signs, then pushed me to the ground and sat on me, breaking three of my ribs. Then they grabbed my protest sign and threw it through the music store window, leaving glass scattered all over the ground.

No one seemed to want to stick up for me, so when the police arrived, I was the only one to get into any trouble at all. Now, writing to you from Juvenile Hall, I feel, since I did this out of love for you, that you could do something to help me – like writing a letter to the police in the City of Salinas, and telling them that I’m innocent, that I suffer from a disease called Beatlemania, and that I couldn’t help it. I know this is a huge favor to ask, but nobody believes me, and I miss my parents so much!

Besides, I haven’t told you half of my story yet. We all ran into the music store, painting signs on the walls like KILL DAVE CLARK with bright red paint. Then we destroyed everything having to do with The Dave Clark Five – albums, posters, buttons – everything went into a huge rubbish heap and we set fire to it and danced around it. You can imagine the smell from all that burning garbage, especially the Five records (they stink anyway).

And so you can see why I desperately need your help. I am very poor and we live in the slums, so I can’t pay for all the broken windows and melted records.

Lots of love from your most loyal and most mistreated fan, Priscilla Casey.

P.S. I Love You!
